High Level Bridge reopens to traffic

Three days earlier than DOH officials originally expected

FAIRMONT — More than three days before West Virginia Division of Highways officials originally anticipated, downtown Fairmont’s High Level Bridge has been reopened to vehicular traffic.

Closed on Oct. 12 to allow for the construction of intricate crosswalks on and around Merchant Street, the bridge was out of commission for three weeks, leaving the David Morgan (Third Street) Bridge as the only artery for motorists to cross the Monongahela River to and from Fairmont’s East and West sides.

Danny Donlin, DOH Division 4 construction engineer, said the bridge was opened back up around 5:30 Monday evening, beating the expected Nov. 6 completion date by several days.
