RIF notices to go out in December

BOE members unhappy about state’s timeline

WHITE HALL — The Marion County Board of Education didn’t have many happy things to discuss at its regular meeting Monday. The broad list of unpleasantness included expulsions, Reductions In Force, liabilities and H1N1 flu.

At least two of the board members attended a recent meeting of the state School Board Association, where a multitude of things was discussed. Among those issues were the updated rules on RIFs. Last year, the state Legislature updated the timeline for RIF notices. Usually, RIFs go out in February. This year, they’ll be going out in mid-December.

“I think it’s awful,” board President the Rev. James Saunders said.

Board member Mary “Sis” Murray said she hopes employees who get the notices understand the board didn’t want to do it that way.

“I apologize ahead of time,” Murray said. “This has nothing to do with us.”
