MANNINGTON — Courtesy of the federal government, the city has been awarded a $75,000 technology grant.
“This is outstanding,” said Mayor Bob Garcia at Monday’s city council meeting. “I think this will help make our community safer.”
Police Chief David James said the grant will pay for technology such as computers, new radio equipment, surveillance cameras and Tasers. The money will be disbursed in March 2010.
“This grant will help us continue to be on the forefront of technology,” he said.
James said the video surveillance cameras will be posted at Joel McCann Memorial Park and around City Hall.
“Video surveillance, particularly at the park, will improve safety in these areas,” he said.
The police department’s five police officers will receive a laptop.
“Bottom line, it’ll give the officers more free time because these computers will make it easier for them to do their paperwork,” he said.
