Levy funding backs many activities

Voters have decisions to make in coming year

FAIRMONT — Freedom may be free, but living in Marion County is not.

Fairmont City Council is considering a levy to raise money to repave and repair streets. The Fairmont-Marion County Transit Authority and the county’s public library system want the voters to renew their levies at the May primary. The county’s Parks and Recreation Commission wants to renew its levy, too. And the Marion County Board of Education is hopeful voters will support a bond initiative later in the year.

Bottom line — voters will decide next year if they want to pay for parks, libraries, buses, streets and possibly school buildings.

Fairmont council members are poised to consider a new five-year levy that could raise more than $4.7 million to cure the city’s ailing road system at Tuesday’s meeting. Earlier this month, council approved a resolution by an 8-1 majority directing the city manager to prepare a levy that would appear on the ballot for the primary election in May 2010. It will cost about $18,000 to put this levy on the ballot.

    According to officials on scene, the fire began around 9:30 p.m. Fire rescue personnel were alerted after one of the victims, a woman, called her daughter to tell her that there was a fire in the house and that they could not get out.

    On Thursday, Judge Michael Aloi denied post-trial motions by Horton’s defense attorney, David DeMoss, to dismiss four counts of burglary and robbery that had resulted in a mistrial in December.

    Assistant State Fire Marshal Mark Lambert advised in a press release Thursday that he believes the rental property, located near Hopewell Road, had been set on fire intentionally.
