FAIRMONT — Mike Caputo, now the District 31 international vice president of the United Mine Workers of America, loves union service.
“It’s something I love to do,” he said Wednesday following the 2009 inauguration of the UMWA international officers at the Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown.
Caputo, from Rivesville, took the oath of office in front of an enthusiastic audience that packed the ballroom. Caputo’s wife, Tina, and daughter, Jessica, accompanied him on stage as he raised his right hand and was sworn in by Carlo Tarley, UMWA secretary-treasurer emeritus.
“It’s a great feeling to know that you have the confidence of the membership of District 31,” Caputo said.
There are 40 local unions in the district, which encompasses northern West Virginia and Ohio. Caputo, who serves as majority whip for the West Virginia House of Delegates, said he plans to visit each local and tour the mines.
