FAIRMONT —
Over the span of a few decades, Marion County schools have seen a slight but steady decline in student enrollment.
Randy Farley, administrative assistant for curriculum, technology and instruction, estimates the attendance number has dropped by approximately 900 students over the past 10 years.
Official enrollment numbers for the 2012-13 school year won’t be confirmed for several weeks, but a few grade levels and schools have noted a significant fluctuation.
For a variety of reasons, some students may not be in school the first few days, which could skew data.
“A week or so into the school year we have a pretty good handle,” Superintendent Gary Price said.
Preliminary attendance numbers after the first day of school on Thursday show a steady decline, except for the high school level.
At East Fairmont High School, 717 students reported to classes on Thursday as opposed to 650 students the previous year. North Marion had 734 students, up 15 students from the previous year, while Fairmont Senior High School recorded 642 students, nearly 30 students more than last year’s report.
