FAIRMONT —
Two Fairmont residents charged with embezzling from a local Christian organization waived their rights to a preliminary hearing Monday before Magistrate Mark Hayes in Marion County Magistrate Court.
Cherie Coogle, 40, and Chad Coogle, age unknown, both of Fairmont, were arrested Jan. 10 by West Virginia State Police and charged with embezzlement of the North Central West Virginia Emmaus Community. The Emmaus Community is a national group that organizes spring and fall Christian retreats for men, women and youth.
According to criminal complaints filed in Marion County Magistrate Court, representatives of the NCWV Emmaus Community filed a complaint with State Police in December alleging that “several unauthorized purchases and cash withdrawals in Marion and Taylor County” had been made on the organization’s debit card.
The discovery was reportedly made at a monthly board meeting in November while reviewing the treasurer’s report for the month of October 2012. Between Oct. 18 and Nov. 20, 2012, the complaint alleges, $2,704.70 in unauthorized withdrawals and payments were made.
On the North Central West Virginia Emmaus Community’s website (ncwvemmaus-.com/emm/), Cherie Coogle is listed as kitchen coordinator and Chad Coogle as being in charge of setup/tear down.
Cherie Coogle was also allegedly entrusted with the debit card “to make purchases for the organizational purposes only.”
