The option of year-round school isn’t getting much support from the employees of Marion County Schools.
In the recent Education Efficiency Audit of West Virginia’s public schools, state board of education members and legislators proposed a variety of changes as to the direction that education should take in the future and ways to reduce costs. One topic discussed in the audit was the possibility of year-round school.
The Central Office of Marion County Schools recently did a rough survey with employees in preparation for the work of the calendar committee this year and in future years, Superintendent of Schools Gary Price said during Monday night’s Marion County Board of Education meeting.
“There really is very little support at this time among employees for a year-round calendar or to start early enough that the first semester would finish prior to Christmas, which some counties are trying to do,” he said. “That doesn’t mean we’ll never go to it.”
Price said individuals want to know if a year-round school calendar would affect the whole county or just certain schools. Many counties only operate year-round school at the elementary level. People are also interested in finding out how this schedule would impact families and transportation.
“I’m not saying that everybody is 100 percent opposed to it, but I think people just have lots and lots of questions they want answered,” he said.
In other news, the Marion County Board of Education has had discussions about collecting information from school booster groups on their finances and operations to show that they’re organized in a fair way, Price said.
