Grant Town in ‘dire need’ of new police cruiser

GRANT TOWN — Grant Town council members signed a resolution Monday to apply for a Community Participation Grant that would provide funding for a new police cruiser.

It is a major need at this point, according to Chief Matt Biggie. The 2005 Dodge Durango that is set up for K-9 has more than 100,000 miles on it and has been in the shop frequently, and a 1999 Crown Victoria has proven to be just as unreliable.

“(The Crown Victoria) has got close to 170,000 miles on it and if you can go out there and turn the key and it starts, that’s a major accomplishment,” Biggie said. “We are in pretty dire need of a cruiser.”

Several requests from other towns have been filed, but not many funds are available. Total funding, if the request is approved, would be provided in the amount of $46,500, with $41,500 coming from grant funds and the remaining $5,000 from the town. Region VI has been in discussions with Biggie and advised that the town would be more likely to receive funding if paperwork is in sooner.

Rivesville already applied for a Community Participation Grant in the amount of $50,000, according to Biggie.

“Everybody that applies is not going to get it,” Biggie said.

Biggie hopes to send out the resolution as soon as possible, and anticipates that they will know more next month.
