Rose: FSU’s goal is to be ‘great institution’

President sets high standards for academics, athletics

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State University President Dr. Maria Rose has a lot of pride in her institution, but she hopes it reaches new heights in 2013.

“This is certainly a very good institution, but we’d like to move it to being a great institution,” Rose said.

In order to make that happen, Rose said FSU has plans, both academically and athletically, for the new year.

In terms of athletics, Rose said coach Jerrod Calhoun has generated a high level of enthusiasm in the university’s basketball program through recruitment and fundraising. More than $100,000 was raised to renovate the men’s basketball locker room, something Rose said is just one improvement that Calhoun has had a hand in, with more to come.

“Coach Calhoun has a lot of new ideas, so I’m looking forward to working with him to get those new ideas implemented,” Rose said.

The next goal on Rose’s list is to bring the enthusiasm for the university’s football team to a similar level.
