East Park marks 100th anniversary

Recognized as ‘cultural center of a community’

FAIRMONT — 100 years is a very long time.

In 1912, the world was gearing up for the first World War; the Titanic made its first and only voyage; East Park Elementary School started its very first school year.

100 years ago to the day, East Park opened its doors to students for the first time, and on Friday the school celebrated that anniversary with an afternoon of festivities.

Mark Hoffman, principal of East Park, said that the school is one of only two schools in the county of this age that is still in use. The other is Mannington Middle School, the oldest school in the state.
