Five local schools are celebrating a great achievement.
The West Virginia Board of Education recently released a list of the Exemplary Schools for 2012-13, based on recommendations by the Office of Education Performance Audits. Only the top 10 percent of public schools and career-technical education centers and programs in the state earn this status, and a total of 64 entities are being recognized this year.
In Marion County, the following schools have been rated as exemplary: East Dale Elementary School, White Hall Elementary School, Fairview Middle School, Monongah Middle School and Fairmont Senior High School.
The Office of Education Performance Audits, which is under the West Virginia Board of Education but separate from the Department of Education, has been naming Exemplary Schools for 12 years.
“This is based upon a weighted index that looks at the proficiency of students in all schools in West Virginia in the areas of reading/language arts, mathematics and social studies,” said Dr. Gus Penix, executive director of the office.
Attendance at the elementary and middle school levels and graduation rates at the high school level are also part of the process that narrows down the schools to the 10 percent that qualify for exemplary status, he said.

Capias arrest warrant issued for Shaquille Lewis
A capias arrest warrant has been issued for Shaquille Lewis, the 19-year-old cousin of William Horton.
Lewis had been subpoenaed to testify at his cousin’s trial, which ended Friday in a four-count “not guilty” verdict. -
Horton found not guilty on all four counts
A Marion County jury found William Michael Horton Jr. not guilty on two counts of nighttime burglary and two counts of nighttime robbery.
