Speeding in school zone fine increased

Barrackville council acts to protect children ‘as much as possible’

BARRACKVILLE — Speeding anywhere is a bad idea.

Speeding in a school zone, where kids could be playing or crossing the street, is particularly dangerous.

On Tuesday, the Barrackville town council voted unanimously to raise the fine for speeding in front of the Barrackville Elementary and Middle Schools from $170 to $260 to put the brakes on the speeding problem and promote the safety of the children.

“Our kids are precious to us,” said Mayor Roy L. Meeks II. “I think we need to protect them as much as possible.”

He said that if fines are doubled in construction zones, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to give the town’s children the same kind of consideration.
