FAIRMONT —
Marion County Schools is focusing on school improvement with the help of an expert.
At Monday night’s meeting, the board passed a motion to pay Richard Lawrence, a school improvement specialist, a maximum of $30,000 during a period of no more than 60 days.
Randy Farley, administrative assistant for curriculum, technology and instruction for Marion County Schools, said Lawrence is providing school improvement services at West Fairmont Middle School and is also working with principals in the county for the leadership modules, which are workshops that are held every year. Lawrence, who comes from the West Virginia Department of Education, is well versed in school improvement topics.
“Hopefully every school, no matter where they are on the spectrum, is trying to improve and do better, because there’s always room for improvement,” Farley said.
He said this is an effort to be proactive as the state is looking to move toward a growth model to evaluate schools and students.
Also during the meeting, the board approved an agreement to bring Jeannette Walls, author of the memoir “The Glass Castle,” to Marion County at a cost of $20,000. Walls will give a presentation in front of the Title I Parent Council and also lead an evening session for all teachers and the community.
Jean Hinzman, Title 1 director for Marion County Schools, said Walls faced great struggles as a child growing up in poverty, and a portion of the book deals with her time living in Welch in McDowell County. Walls’ book is full of hope and resiliency and has a message for parents, teachers and the whole community.
