FAIRMONT —
Two Fairmont men were arrested Saturday evening on drug charges after a routine traffic stop turned into a police pursuit.
Cedric Black, 60, and Joshua Baker, 28, were arrested after an incident that took place at approximately 8:30 p.m., when Black was stopped by Marion County Sheriff’s Department deputies for crossing the white line while traveling down Fairmont Avenue.
Deputies who had observed the car weaving stopped the bright orange Honda with a black top at the intersection of Third Street and Fairmont Avenue, said Ralph Wright, chief deputy of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.
“They got the driver’s information and he appeared intoxicated,” Wright said. “When they were running his driver’s license, the back-up officer observed the passenger in the vehicle trying to hide something down his pants. When he approached the vehicle, the driver rolled up the windows and drove off.”
Two units, including one that had been coming in the opposite direction, followed the car that was being driven by Black, Wright said, until the deputies were able to box the Honda in on Maple Avenue.
At that point, Baker, “the passenger, took off running,” Wright said. “They were able to get the driver in custody and able to get the passenger after pursuit on foot.”
Baker was found with a half ounce of cocaine, individually wrapped in four bags of approximately 3 1/2 grams each, known as an “eight ball,” Wright said. Baker was arrested on charges of possession with intent to deliver marijuana and cocaine.
