FCDP receives $40,000 from county

FAIRMONT — A restored building on Fairmont Avenue will now serve as a solid support system for small and new businesses in the region.

Known as the Business Incubator, the building is in the process of being taken over by the Fairmont Community Development Partnership. The group will work with the state’s Small Business Development Center to find people with new business ideas to set up in the building.

Funding was provided by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the amount of $100,000, and on Wednesday, more money came through for the FCDP. The Marion County Commission provided $40,000 from coal severance tax during its meeting.

“It’s a project I think really is for the public good,” FCDP Executive Director Bob Gribben said. “It will benefit a large area, just not talking about benefiting Fairmont Avenue or the City of Fairmont. It’s going to benefit the county and actually be something that benefits the business area in North Central West Virginia.”

Two active business incubation programs are already in the area at West Virginia University and the High Tech Consortium and have been successful, according to Gribben. Smaller and newer businesses that are brought in by the group will receive support and guidance toward making their businesses more successful.
