Maddie’s Angels holding bake sale, pet supply drive

FAIRMONT — A stroll through the Marion County Humane Society shows a number of dogs and cats without homes, some having been there for months without a glance from visitors.

In the past several months, Maddie’s Angels has been hard at work putting together fundraisers that are needed for the animals.

A no-kill shelter, the Marion County Humane Society takes in many homeless pets. Officials said supplies are necessary to accommodate the society’s needs.

“It is very important for the community to show their support for the many animals that live their life at the shelter,” said Lisa Boyce, who spearheaded Maddie’s Angels. “Many of them have been there for several months to a year.”

For more than 10 years, Boyce has been rescuing and helping place homeless pets. Knowing the difficulties that nonprofits like the Marion County Humane Society face by not having enough supplies, she has organized a pet supply drive and bake sale at Dairy Creme Corner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Boyce wants local residents to step up to the plate and “fill up a truck” full of the following supplies: cat litter, Iams dog and cat food, blankets, dog toys, rawhides, disposable gloves, disinfectant cleaner, scrubbing brooms and Frontline flea medication for dogs and cats. Gift cards from Walmart or Staples are being accepted. Items may also be dropped off at Middletown Animal Clinic, Aultmans and Backwoods Flowers N More.

“The pet supply event is significant because it provides animals with the necessities such as food, shampoo, brushes, blankets and all the things essential for an animal to live a quality life,” said Iris Canfield, who serves as a volunteer for Maddie’s Angels.

Not only should the community attend to provide the supplies the society is in need of, but to also show support for the organizations that are attempting to save animals’ lives, Canfield said.

And as Boyce said, if nothing else, seeing the number of animals in need of a home should ignite a reason to help.

“It is very hard to see so many homeless animals that would make great pets waiting to be adopted,” Boyce said.

Those interested in volunteering or who have questions may contact Boyce at 304-612-SPAY (7729).
