Candlelight vigil to honor victims and survivors of domestic violence

FAIRMONT — HOPE Inc. will hold its annual candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. today at the Education Building quad on the campus of  Fairmont State and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

“The service is to remember and honor victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault,” said Athena Stima, adult and children’s case manager, and volunteer coordinator.

Despite increased public knowledge about domestic violence, this remains a serious issue, she said.

“There is such a need for education,” she said. “So many people are affected, unfortunately, by domestic violence and sexual assault.

“It is still a problem, absolutely. We try to get that message out to the community, to let them know and be aware of the help and services HOPE offers.”

Guest speaker Joyce Yedlosky of the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic  Violence will talk about domestic violence and fatality.

A moment of silence and candlelight vigil will follow outside.

“We have a moment of silence because we want everyone to sit back and reflect, and remember” victims of domestic violence, Stima said.
