The town of White Hall might just become a little bit bigger.
It all depends on the outcome of an annexation public hearing this Wednesday before the Marion County Commission.
Residents of the Nichols Drive area had approached White Hall council to be annexed into the town. They wanted such services as police protection, snow removal and street repair.
The town made the request a few weeks ago to the commission. A public hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Room 403, J. Harper Meredith Building, following the weekly commission meeting.
This is the chance for those residents to voice their opinions, said commission president Randy Elliott.
The 20-or-so residences would be charged a $35 annual fire fee, said White Hall mayor Jesse Corley.
“Their address would be White Hall or Fairmont, although technically they would be in White Hall.”
The proposed annexation includes “the loop” of Nichols Drive and Lake View, he said.
With a most recent census population of 648, White Hall is a Class 4 municipality (population under 2,000), he said. He wasn’t sure by how much the annexation would increase that amount.
“We’re a long ways from becoming a Class 3 (2,000 to 10,000),” he said.
White Hall can offer street repair, street lights, fire hydrants, snow removal and police protection. Fire protection is provided by Valley and Boothsville VFDs.
The fee would help fund a public safety building.
