Report on fatal mine accident released

Loveridge worker dies after rib shears and he’s pinned against bumper of continuous mining machine

FAIRMONT — The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration has released a preliminary report of an accident which left a coal miner dead Thursday.

Jessie Adkins, 39, of Belington, died in an accident at Consol Energy’s Loveridge mine Thursday.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa, and two teenage children.

According to the report, the accident occurred at 11:55 a.m.

Adkins was working as an integral roof bolter and died when he was struck with a rib, or part of the ceiling, measuring about 193 inches long, 55 inches high and up to 16 inches thick. Adkins had installed one test roof bolt and was near the left rear bumper of a continuous mining machine when the accident occurred. The rib sheared and pinned him against the machine.
