FAIRMONT —
A citizens’ committee has kicked off its efforts to promote the proposed school bond in Marion County.
Ten committee members met at the Marion County Chamber of Commerce’s office in downtown Fairmont Tuesday evening to start planning ways to market the bond to voters.
The bond election will take place along with the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The proposed $10 million bond will include the construction of a competition gymnasium and expansion of the cafeteria at North Marion High School for the commons area.
“The board of education ... we have to kind of have a hands-off approach to this,” said Marion County Superintendent of Schools Gary Price. “We really can’t as a board push an agenda for or against. We can provide information, and that’s why we ask for a citizens committee to kind of take over taking care of the bond.”
The bond committee includes Rusty DeVito, Mary Jo Thomas, Becky Brown, Staci Strawderman, Steve Malnick, Steve Rodriguez, Rick Ott, Brenda Giannis, Dixie Yann, Mike Parrish, Chris Freeman, Sonny Bartic, Debbie Johnson, Rocky Manchin, Chuck Sconish, Becky Parrish and Orie Ellen Sterling. All of these individuals were nominated by a Marion County Board of Education member and approved at the board’s Aug. 13 meeting.
The board nominated a few other people for the committee, but those individuals said they couldn’t commit to attending the meetings and offered to help in other ways, said Randy Farley, administrative assistant for curriculum, technology and instruction for Marion County Schools.
