FAIRMONT —
The Urban Renewal Authority of Fairmont is involving Fairmont State University in its most recent plans to improve and enhance the city.
“In everything I do, I try to involve Fairmont State and Pierpont (Community & Technical College) in some capacity,” City Planner Kathy Wyrosdick said.
Wyrosdick has conceptualized a design competition in conjunction with faculty members of Fairmont State’s architecture program.
“It’s a way to engage the students in becoming more involved in our downtown,” Wyrosdick said. “It gives them real-life experience and helps us tremendously by giving us a perspective we wouldn’t normally see. What we really want them to look at is what we can do around the Masonic Temple.”
The designs will be judged by a volunteer panel, and Wyrosdick also hopes to display the students’ work at the court house, giving community members a chance to name a community-choice award winner.
Also at Tuesday night’s URA meeting, board members discussed further options and possibilities for revitalizing Fairmont.
Several obstacles have been faced in the URA’s plan to restore downtown Fairmont, including a lack of funding which leads to the inability to demolish blighted buildings and spark interest among developers.
