FAIRMONT —
When notices regarding math training were sent to parents of students at Watson Elementary School, facilitators didn’t expect a large crowd. In any given year, they were lucky to have 12 or 15 show up.
Last Thursday, nearly 50 parents and students were in attendance.
“I think because we sent the letter out, we made it exciting,” academic coach Janie Merendino said. “This is something new and exciting. We’re trying to show them, if you weren’t the best whiz yourself, you can still help your kids.”
Going above and beyond what parents learned during school, the training offered a new perspective that showed parents how to think of alternative ways to solve a math problem.
During an activity called “Math in Action,” parents were split into groups with their children, in which they were to solve a variety of mathematical equations. In order to successfully complete each problem, the group had to demonstrate a different approach to solving the problem than the previous group had used.
For many parents, it was a lesson different from what they remembered. Mathematical problems can be solved in more than one way.
“It was so nice to see the parents and the children, and the children were involved in the discussion as well,” Title 1 facilitator Pam Vincent said. “I think it was an eye-opener for a lot of our parents.”
