Law enforcement: Slow down and drive defensively

FAIRMONT — Sammy Hagar, speaking for his generation, proclaimed, “I can’t drive 55” in his classic song of the same name.

If he’d written the song today (and lived in West Virginia), he might have sung, “I can’t drive 70.”

Highway and driver safety continue to be important issues facing Marion County’s law enforcement and emergency responders. Speeding is one of the many concerns they deal with daily, but keeping the roads safe isn’t all on their shoulders. Everyone can help make roads and intersections safer places to travel.

Marion County Sheriff Joe Carpenter said traffic control is just as important to the sheriff’s department as the criminal investigations they do.

“That saves lives also,” he said.
