Across the U.S., all 50 states seem to have something in common with their state seals, representing the culture and people of that specific state.
West Virginia’s state seal captures the culture and the citizens in its borders.
Natalie Tennant, West Virginia’s secretary of state, is the keeper of the official state seal. She said the state has a Great Seal and a Less Seal, but the Great Seal is the one that’s more common.
“The backside of the seal is not necessarily the lesser seal,” she said. “It is the governor’s seal that the governor uses.”
Joseph Diss Debar, from Doddridge County, designed the seal and it was adopted by the state Legislature in September 1863.
