FAIRMONT — A quiet neighborhood is in shock after vandals defaced the street and cars with racial slurs over the weekend.
Police are investigating the incident that occurred Saturday morning at the corner of Bon View Avenue and Broadway Street, located in the northwestern part of the city.
A day later, Jim Tate, 62, of Bon View Avenue, can still see the ugly words written in white spray paint on the street in front of his house.
“As a neighborhood, we all get along together,” he said. “There has never been a problem like this until now. My question is why?”
A neighbor of Tate’s, who didn’t want his name published out of fear of retribution by the vandals, said crimes like this are new to the neighborhood.
“I was shocked to see these kinds of things in our neighborhood,” the source said. “Our family has lived in this neighborhood for 50 years and never seen anything like this. I believe the crime was racially or politically motivated.”
