Meredith Hardin can still remember the days when she served as a mentor with Jayenne Elementary’s Energy Express program.
Now a site supervisor, Hardin has witnessed the impact the program has had on Marion County children over the years.
One of the participating students had a learning disability and never wanted to read until working with his mentor.
“His mentor said he went home and read a chapter book,” Hardin said. “That was special because that child struggled to read and we inspired him to challenge himself to read more.”
An award-winning statewide summer reading program, Energy Express is in its 15th summer in Marion County and recently hosted its open house.
Over the summer, the free program served more than 39 children. In the program they engaged in reading-based educational activities. Focusing on activities in art, writing, drama and recreation, the program helped students maintain their reading skills while also teaching them the importance of proper nutrition. Two meals were provided each day.

Three Rivers Festival features variety of entertainment

Hearing set for murder suspects
