MORGANTOWN — Approximately $40 million in Recovery Act funding will go to the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown for further development of carbon capture and storage technology.

On Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Sen. Jay Rockefeller stopped in Morgantown to tour the NETL site and hold a press conference. During the media event, Chu announced that NETL and its Regional University Alliance will be awarded this funding to create simulation tools for CO2 capture technology development and deployment in the state.

NETL’s Regional University Alliance for Energy Technology Innovation — which includes West Virginia University, Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech — will collaborate with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, Pacific Northwest National Lab and Lawrence Livermore National Lab on this project.
