FAIRMONT —
A mid-morning fire destroyed a home off Ranch Road in Hopewell.
According to the Marion County 911 log, the fire was called in at 11:10 a.m. Monday.
“Valley arrived on scene first,” said Mark Niggemyer, assistant chief with the Winfield District Volunteer Fire Department.
“The fire was already going through the roof. Evidently it had a chance to burn pretty good before it got to the roof. That’s when the neighbors saw it.”
No one was at home at the time. The family dog reportedly died in the fire.
“We never found the dog,” Niggemyer said.
The fire was secured at around 5:30 p.m.
“We were there that long because the roof fell in,” he said. “There was a lot of overhaul to do and hot spots. We literally had to cut the roof up into pieces and haul it out of the house and attack the hot spots.
“It was a worker.”
The house is considered a total loss, he added.
