FAIRMONT — Holding the dying Dachshund mix in her arms just months ago was more than Lisa Boyce could bear.
And even though that memory ended in tragedy, it has inspired a new mission in the area.
Thinking back to that day, Boyce remembers that a teenage boy had found the mother Dachshund mix and its four puppies shot in the head. Two of the pups died instantly while the others were transported to Dr. Amanda Hartman at the Middletown Animal Clinic.
“To see it like this, because someone didn’t want them anymore, because someone didn’t want to take care of them anymore, it’s heartbreaking,” Hartman said. “And it makes you lose a little bit of trust in humanity.”
Once Boyce learned about the dogs, she went to the clinic where she saw the despicable state of the puppies, barely alive and crying out. She then learned that the mother was going to be put down.
