FAIRMONT — The West Virginia High Technology Consortium Foundation’s research in sensor web technologies is being used in the fight against California wildfires.
This work is being done within the WVHTC Foundation’s Mission Systems Group. The team includes program manager Ken Witt, lead software developer Jason Stanley, and standards integration lead David Smithbauer.
Witt explained that a sensor web is basically a collection of sensor assets that are used in a nontraditional manner — they are interworking to provide a bigger picture than the original intent. A scientist may deploy a sensor to collect a specific type of data for research, but that sensor could communicate with a network of sensors to allow the system to accomplish a lot more than what it is designed to do.
