Senior Forum pushes creation of charter schools

By Katie Wilson

FAIRMONT — A group of Marion County youth is out to change the world a little bit at a time.

The Senior Forum is an educational program offered by the Marion County Chamber of Commerce. Senior Forum is geared to smooth the transition from high school into college and the real world.

Participating students are paired with a mentor in the business community to work with for the year following high school graduation. Those students also travel to Charleston to meet with various members of the state’s executive and judicial branches.

Chamber President Tina Shaw said this year’s group includes 14 students.

As part of the program, the students chose a bill introduced in the state Legislature that would allow the creation of charter schools.
