Connector work on hold; projection for completion unchanged

FAIRMONT — The recent rash of snowy weather blasting the county has officially halted construction work on Fairmont’s developing Gateway Connector for the winter.

West Virginia Division of Highways District 4 construction engineer Danny Donlin said that crews stopped working last week on the 1.5-mile, four-lane highway set to connect downtown Fairmont with Interstate 79 when snow-removal efforts began cutting significantly into their regular contract work.

He explained that as long as the contractors can make money, they will continue to work, but the constant snow, ice and freezing temperatures were cutting into their profit line.

“They were planning on working, but with the snow and cold they (weren’t getting) any production,” Donlin said of the contractors.
