Needed nutrition

Watson part of pilot program providing free breakfast, lunch

FAIRMONT — It’s tough to learn your ABCs and 123s when your tummy is growling.

The 400-some students at Watson Elementary won’t have to worry about that this year.

They’re part of a national federal pilot program that is serving up free breakfast and lunch to qualifying schools in West Virginia.

Offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Community Eligibility Option (CEO) is also helping students in New York, Ohio and the District of Columbia receive the nutrition they need to succeed in school.

Watson is one of 280 schools — and the only one in Marion County — from 35 eligible county school systems in the state participating in the program. CEO will allow nearly 90,000 low-income students in the state to eat breakfast and lunch at school at no charge.
