‘Game-changer’

Main Street goal: College town, not town with a college

FAIRMONT — Main Street Fairmont wants to make change happen, and is starting by trying to improve the relationship between college students and the downtown area.

The organization is beginning weekly meetings at its office downtown to talk about what can be done today to turn the Friendly City — with the presence of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College — into a college town, instead of just a town with a college. A small group of community members started the conversation and shared their thoughts about shifting the culture during the first meeting Thursday afternoon.

“I really think embracing that idea of trying to be a college town is going to be a game-changer for us as a community,” said Kate Greene, executive director of Main Street Fairmont.
