Eddie Jack Washington is one step closer to being returned to Fairmont.
On Feb. 7, Washington was arrested without incident in Tampa, Fla., by U.S. Marshals and charged with the as-of-yet unprosecuted execution-style slaying of three Fairmont residents in 1974 at Windmill Park.
Washington was expected to appear before Judge Walter R. Heinrich on Tuesday morning in Hillsborough County Courthouse to hear terms of his extradition.
“He will be extradited to West Virginia within the next two weeks,” said Fairmont Police Chief Kelley D. Moran.
Arrangements are incomplete for that move, he added.
Washington is charged with the triple homicide of Guy Lester Phillips, 20, and his wife, Wanda Jane Phillips, 19, and Billy Ray Cobb, 27.
Their lifeless bodies were found Aug. 2, 1974, in the remote city park. All had been shot in the back of the head and were lying face up one by one by one in a row. All were fully clothed and showed signs of struggle.
Washington waived his right to extradition Friday in an initial appearance before a magistrate in Hillsborough County Circuit Court, according to Moran.
After his return to Marion County, he will be lodged at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddrige County.
“He needs to be arraigned on criminal charges,” Moran said. “Those charges will be for the triple homicide.
“There is a possibility an additional arrest will be made,” he said without further elaboration.
He praised all involved in the investigation.
“I think everyone did an outstanding job.”

Three Rivers Festival features variety of entertainment
