FAIRMONT —
“Our whole motto is not to judge, only to serve.”
Bruce Roberts, the director of the Fairmont-Marion County Food Pantry located next door to the Union Mission in Fairmont, said the pantry is serving more people than ever before.
“In 2011, we served 6,060 people,” he said. “In 2012, we served 7,090.” That’s about a 15 percent increase over the course of a single year.
“The need keeps growing,” Roberts said. For many, Social Security or disability payments just don’t go far enough to cover food and other monthly expenses.
“How do you survive on six, seven, $800 a month?” he asked. The pantry helps keep them from having to choose between eating and paying the electric.
