FAIRMONT —
Juanita Brooks, a volunteer at the Soup Opera in downtown Fairmont, has been volunteering for about 15 years.
“I didn’t have anything to do at home,” she said. “Our church did this, so I started doing this.”
She, like many people in Marion County, understands the benefit of volunteering and giving back.
Brooks volunteers once a week at the Soup Opera, and enjoys helping others and interacting with people.
“It’s just good to be able to help them,” she said. “Most of them are very appreciative of us being here. We’re just one big, happy family.”
Volunteering has become a part of Brooks’ life because she sees strangers come together to work for others.
“They come to be together to cook and give back to other people,” she said. “It’s always a good time because this is an excellent crew.”
Volunteering allows people to learn new things. One thing Brooks has learned through volunteering is how giving some people can be.
“We’ve learned that the community of Fairmont is very generous,” she said. “The community helps out a lot. We can do this because they are so generous.”
Brooks has more appreciation for what she has by volunteering and helping those less fortunate. She said it’s her turn to give back to the community.
