FARMINGTON — Gov. Joe Manchin arrived at the Farmington Fire Station late Monday morning to talk to community members about this past weekend’s snow storm and the efforts to help the affected areas.
“The northern part of the state got hit really hard,” Manchin said. “We wanted to make sure we had all the necessary assets.”
The state wants to know if anyone is shut in their homes and can’t get out, and people should call 911 for assistance, he said. Everything possible will be done to get the necessary supplies to people.
Manchin said 300 to 400 National Guard soldiers have been deployed in the area to help citizens.
Sgt. 1st Class John Oliverio said the National Guard troops have accomplished many humanitarian efforts, such as delivering medicine and food. He encouraged people to call 304-363-1010 to reach the National Guard headquarters at the Marion County Armory.
Jimmy Gianato, director of the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, accompanied Manchin on his tour of the storm’s impact across West Virginia. As of Monday morning, approximately 30,000 homes in the state were without power, Gianato said.
