Thousands of customers without power

FAIRMONT — The forceful winter storm that struck Marion County over the weekend left many residents in the dark.

Mark Nitowski, manager of external communications for Allegheny Power, said the company currently has about 4,800 customers in the county. As of late Monday afternoon, about 1,500 customers were still without power in the Fairmont area, 650 in Mannington, and 600 in Rivesville. Those were the largest concentrations of power outages remaining in Marion County, he said.

Allegheny restored power to about 17,000 customers in the county, and close to 80,000 customers overall in West Virginia. A total of about 21,000 state customers still didn’t have electricity by the end of business on Monday, Nitowski said.

He said Fairmont, Morgantown and other areas of northern West Virginia were hit the hardest in the state.
