Powerful storm takes its toll

Thousands without power; tree block roads

FAIRMONT — A major storm Friday night has taken its toll, with hundreds of trees blocking roadways and thousands of people out of power.

Chris McIntire, director of Marion County’s Office of Emergency Services, said that the county is scrambling to clear the roadways for emergency vehicles.

“We’re just trying to handle them as fast as we can,” he said.

While the storm had been on the radar, it didn’t initially appear as though it would be particularly severe. McIntire said that the county started to pay attention to it around 6:30 p.m., when the National Weather Service issued a severe weather alert for Harrison County.
