FAIRMONT —
West Virginia State Police made several arrests this afternoon with charges of child neglect, abuse and burglary.
Shawn Casey Devericks, 29, and Michelle Ashley Devericks, 23, of Fairmont, face accusations of child neglect and child abuse leading to injury, respectively, in Marion County. Shawn Devericks is accused of child abuse in Harrison County, and Michelle is charged with child neglect.
According to criminal complaints, Michelle held down her five-year-old daughter while Shawn Devericks, the little girl’s step-father, beat her bare bottom with a belt, leaving bruises and welts. Michelle Devericks also reportedly bit the girl as punishment for biting her sister, leaving a mark found by child services.
State Police also arrested Newanda Nichole Sickles, 21, and Rickie William Palmer Jr., 29, both of Mannington, on burglary charges for allegedly stealing a safe containing a gun from neighbors and selling it.
