FAIRMONT —
Mark Hayes has been working for the side of justice for just about his whole life.
Now, as a Democratic candidate for Marion County magistrate, he hopes to help the people of Marion County get the justice they need from the other side of the bench.
Hayes is a lifelong Marion County resident.
“I’ve lived in Marion County my whole life — except my birth,” he laughed. “We came right back.”
A graduate of East Fairmont High School, Hayes joined the Fairmont Police Department in 1981 as a patrol officer. Over the next 28 1/2 years, he made his way up the ranks to detective, sergeant, lieutenant and eventually police chief.
Hayes graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., in 2006 with 250 other police officers from across the nation. Participation is by invitation only through a nomination process. He is one of only two Fairmont police officers to have graduated from there in the past 20 years.
He served as the Three Rivers Drug and Violent Crime Taskforce coordinator from 2003-07, working with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and federal agencies on drug investigations and arrests.
Currently, Hayes is majoring in psychology at Fairmont State University.
Hayes said his experience is one of the most important things he brings to the position.
“I’m well studied in court procedures, what’s admissible, what’s not, laws of arrest, search and seizure and specifically the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution dealing with unreasonable search and seizure and the right against self-incrimination.
“I believe the magistrate’s position would be the culmination of my life’s work in law enforcement,” he said.
