FAIRMONT — Following the recent closing of North Marion IGA, efforts are under way to try to bring another grocery store to Mannington.
Dec. 31, 2009, was the last day of business for the IGA, located at 103 West Main St. in downtown Mannington.
Russell Yost, the store owner, previously said that the tough economy had a big impact on his business. He struggled to keep North Marion IGA open over the past year, and eventually there wasn’t any other option but to close the grocery store.
Shop ’n Save, which is on the other end of town at city limits, is currently the only grocery store in operation in Mannington. For people living in the downtown area who don’t have transportation, they must walk a few miles along the highway carrying all of their purchased goods, Orie Ellen Sterling said.
Sterling, who proudly calls Mannington her hometown, and a group of about 10 other concerned citizens are working together to get some sort of business to buy the former IGA building. The group’s top priority is putting a new grocery store in that space to serve the needs of the people, Sterling said.
