FSU football recruit pleads not guilty to obstruction charge

FAIRMONT — A Fairmont State University football recruit pled not guilty to charges of obstruction of a Morgantown Police officer and battery.

Timothy Leon Orange II, 21, of Fairmont, was arrested in June after he was Tased by police around 2 a.m. on Chesnut Street outside Bent Willey’s bar.

Orange, a junior from Miami, Fla., is listed as a wide receiver on the Falcon football team 2011 roster.

According to the criminal complaint, police observed Orange shove Miranda Wilson while they were in front of Bent Willey’s. Police tried to confront Orange, but he walked away and did not stop.

Orange did not comply with verbal commands, the complaint said. Orange was about five feet away when police deployed a Taser to the upper middle portion of his back. Orange fell to the ground and was arrested without incident, the complaint said.

Orange pled not guilty to battery against Wilson and obstructing an officer, both misdemeanors, on Wednesday in Morgantown Municipal Court.

FSU spokeswoman Amy Pellegrin confirmed that Orange is an FSU student and he is on the football team’s roster for 2011. She said Orange is a transfer student this year from Florida State University, so this would be his first season as a member of the football team.

Pellegrin said the athletic department and FSU officials are aware of the incident and that it is being investigated by the Morgantown Police Department. She said it is too soon to speculate on any potential disciplinary action — that would need to wait for the outcome of any court proceeding.

Pellegrin said the team is not practicing right now, but some team members are on campus participating in the off-season workout program.

She said Falcon football coach Mike Lopez and FSU athletic director Rusty Elliott are out of town and on vacation, so they were unable to comment in time for this report.
