Victor “Vic” Cassella, a Republican, is a candidate for magistrate for Marion County.
“I want to be a voice for people who cannot or don’t know how to voice their opinion,” he said.
He’s been intrigued by the magistrate court system since he was a boy, when he’d leave from his parents’ confectionary on Jackson Street and cross over to explore the newly built J. Harper Meredith Building. The “well-oiled machine” of magistrate court fascinated him so much he knew he would be a magistrate one day.
“I want to help people. We’re getting away from those core values in the magistrate system.
“I may be the one to bring back those original core values of treating people with respect, of looking at different factors before you’re judged.
“I understand every crime is dangerous, but some are just minor infractions, being at the wrong place at the wrong time. They try to put you at a higher bail than necessary. If you can’t afford that bail, you stay in jail, lose your job and home, your spouse and children leave. It all circles down.
“I want to keep Marion County safe for everybody by doing it the right way,” he said. “The way our Founders meant for the magistrate system to be.
“I hope people have enough trust and faith in me to know I am qualified to be magistrate.
“I look at things fairly and am open-minded and unbiased. I think there are two sides to every story. A magistrate is responsible for looking into each case, what the arresting officer says and what the arrestee might have to say.
