October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at Fairmont General Hospital, that also will mean a final push to raise money for a new digital mammography machine.
The kickoff by the Fairmont General Hospital Foundation took place nearly a year ago and the plan was that by now, the facility would have a new digital machine that would allow technicians to screen women faster.
However, the campaign slowed down this summer, but foundation coordinator Whitney Rae Hatcher hopes to have the funds raised by the end of the month.
Currently, $372,912 has been raised for the machine, which has an estimated price tag of $440,000. The fundraising goal is $500,000, with the additional $60,000 going toward renovations of the radiology suite.
Hatcher was getting ready to implement the corporate campaign this summer when she had to take a medical leave of absence for a few weeks.
“I think a lot of momentum died,” she said.
Now that Hatcher has returned, fundraising has started back up in earnest.
Corporate levels of giving are $3,000, $10,000 and $25,000 and can be paid over the course of three years, Hatcher noted.
“This is a group we’ve never targeted before,” Hatcher said. “We’ve targeted individuals before but never targeted this group to help with the campaign.”
