White Hall clerk charged with embezzlement

Martin accused of taking more than $10,000 from municipal, general funds

FAIRMONT — West Virginia State Police arrested White Hall’s town clerk on charges of embezzlement Tuesday.

Madeline Alam Martin, 70, is charged with embezzling more than $10,000 over the past couple of years from municipal and general funds, the criminal complaint says.

According to Cpl. M. Boyle, the State Police were contacted by the Town of White Hall’s attorney, Joseph T. Hodges, in February after the finance clerk, Melissa Marko, discovered three payments that had been received but not deposited.

Marko alerted Mayor Jesse Corley and Treasurer Beverly Owens, who reviewed receipts from the past year and allegedly discovered a number of other undeposited receipts, the criminal complaint says.
