FAIRMONT — Friday should have been a typical beautiful early September day.
Temperatures were mild, a slight breeze rustled leaves that in a few weeks would turn vivid maroon and gold, and the sky was achingly bright blue, dotted with only a few small clouds.
At any other time, this would have been perfect for daydreaming of the weekend or making plans for the big ball game.
But Friday was Sept. 11 — the eighth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks — a date that can bring a perfect late-summer morning to a somber standstill.
