Fairmont bond project gains ground

Funds would provide revenue to fix water treatment plant

FAIRMONT — Council members are one step closer to approving a $10.1 million bond project necessary to fix the city’s water treatment plant once and for all.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, council approved the first of three required votes on a measure intended to provide the revenue needed to undertake the corrective action necessary to ensure there is no repeat of the 2007 water crisis that closed schools, among other places. City engineers and consultants developed a corrective plan that enhances water production and resolves pretreatment of water pumped from Tygart River among other steps needed to provide service to more than 13,000 customers.

The city has asked the state’s Public Service Commission to raise water rates to repay the bonds. The PSC will make its decision by Oct. 2.

    A Mannington man has been indicted by the Marion County grand jury on 14 counts of sexual abuse.
    James Edward Carpenter, 34, of 100 Parkview Drive, Apt. 101, Mannington, is charged with four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 10 counts of sexual abuse by parent, guardian or custodian.

    Jeremy Nathan Ferraro, 31, Fairmont, was indicted on forgery; uttering; obtaining money, property or services by false pretenses; and domestic battery, third offense.
